The event the King Pack selected for us to attend is a charity gala with proceeds going to a hospital program. We've been here for hours already, mingling and dancing amongst the powerful elite of the city. All I can think is that my feet hurt. The side zipper on the dress pinches the skin under my armpit and the dress is tighter than I’m used to. No doubt I’ve put on some weight in the last week and this dress isn’t forgiving. I’ve been under the microscope for hours and it’s starting to fry my brain.

The outfit the pack selected for me looks gorgeous. It’s completely different than the signature princess image my mother has crafted for me over years. The mermaid gown with the low scooped neckline and art-deco beaded pattern is form-fitting and a little slinky, the fabric almost sheer in places. The slim straps crisscross to expose a large swath of my back.

They’ve had my stylist pull my hair to one side with smooth victory rolls to expose my neck. Gold heels, at least four inches tall, adorn my feet, and my makeup is heavy, dark, and smoky. The only jewelry I wear is the courting gift from the King Pack. I look like a naughty gift about to be unwrapped.

This is a statement. My first introduction to the world as almost Sadie King. The photoshoot of me getting ready beforehand in the gifts they selected is all part of the promo. The message? This little omega is all grown and ready to be claimed. When the stylist first showed me the ensemble, I almost backed out. They might as well have bitten my neck before we walked in tonight. The move seems garish and unnecessary.

It seems they think my becoming Sadie King is inevitable. With Pack Campbell not really showing interest since we signed the contract, I guess it is. The King pack is a great catch. Most omegas would be lining up for their chance at them. The thing is, they’re not awful, but I don’t think they’re for me. All I can think about regarding their little orchestrated display tonight is that I hope no one in the Jackson pack sees these pictures.

Now, the pack speaks with a group of men with old money, their omega mates off in the crowd somewhere. I hang on Alex's arm, silent. Nothing is expected of me at the moment. I feel the buzz of my phone in my small clutch, but I don't dare look at it. The desire to do so is a nervous tic buzzing in my head. Instead, I keep a carefully blank smile and nod every so often at the men around me. I let them look their fill without comment. They're old and harmless, if creepy.

Alex's whiskey scent irritates my senses and makes my eyes water. I keep having to scratch my nose. The older alphas excuse themselves, and Alex hands me off to Nicholas while he goes in search of a potential client.
